What Is That Debt Actually Costing You?

Most people know the balance. Very few know the total — how long it takes to clear at the payment they are making, and how much of it is interest. Put your numbers in and find out.

Questions people ask

How is this worked out?

Each month, interest is charged on whatever is still outstanding at the APR you entered divided by twelve. Whatever is left of your payment after that interest comes off the balance. That repeats until the balance reaches zero.

It is a simplified model. Real agreements can differ — fees, promotional rates, how a lender allocates payments across different balances, and daily rather than monthly interest all change the exact figures.

Why does it say my balance never clears?

Because the payment is at or below the monthly interest, so there is nothing left over to reduce the balance. That is arithmetic, not a personal failing — and it is exactly the situation where getting the debt reviewed matters more than finding another £10 a month.

Can you freeze my interest or write off my debt?

No, and be wary of anyone who says they can before looking at your case. The lower-rate comparison here exists to show what the interest rate is costing you over the life of the debt. It is not a prediction that a creditor will freeze interest, reduce the balance or accept a reduced settlement.

Do you store my figures?

No. The whole calculation happens in your browser. Your figures are saved on your own device so the page remembers them when you come back, they are never sent to us, and they are never put into the web address — so a link you share cannot expose them. Use "Clear my figures" to remove them.
